The present volume deals with these different and changeable foundations of meaning during the upheaval of 1989/1991 from a European-comparative perspective. Starting with a critical questioning of the concept of revolution, the genesis of image memories as well as controversial places of remembrance and current historical-political instrumentalizations of the upheavals of 1989/1991 in Germany, Bulgaria, Lithuania, Poland, Romania and Czechoslovakia are examined.
