National identity is one of the most important characteristics of our societies. In the last centuries, but also before that, identities of different groups developed, which were shaped according to different criteria (such as cultural and ethnic characteristics). For thousands of years people have formed groups and communities according to such criteria and thereby expressed their affiliation and group identity. In twelve articles, archaeologists and historians from the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń deal with the question of ethnic, national and pre-national group identity in selected areas of Poland and Central Europe from prehistory to the 20th century.
