Description
This is Volume 7 of Samuel Pufendorf. Gesammelte Werke, general editor, Wilhelm Schmidt-Biggemann (Akademie Verlag, 1994– ). It contains ten dissertations from Pufendorf's Dissertationes academicae selectiores (DAS, 1675) and four additional dissertations not included in that collection. Works in the 1675 edition are compared with those in subsequent Sammelbände (1677, 1678, 1679, 1698), and with the separate first editions of each essay. Also included are two responses by Pufendorf to critics (Teuteburg, Scharschmidt) of Monzambano (1667) which have not previously been republished, and the prefaces to the 1675 and 1698 editions. This version of DAS contains – at the beginning – an Editor’s Introduction, a Note on the Text, five Tables comparing previous individual and collective editions (also listing respondents, dedicees, and others), and Synopses (in English) of all eighteen works included. At the end there are a complete Citation Index, a listing of Sources & Editions used, an appendix containing so-called Peritexts (dedications and laudations accompanying the separate, first editions), a Bibliography, biographical sketches (Identifications) of important personages; and both Person- and Subject- Indices. The individual Latin essays are accompanied by Footnotes devoted to variants and other textual matters, and by Endnotes (after each work) providing source information and explicating content.
