Description
Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528) repeatedly occupied himself with the story of Adam and Eves fall into sin from the book of Genesis in the Old Testament. From 1504 to 1510 he created his works for the all-important event in the history of creation: a copper engraving, a double panel painting, a woodcut, a pen drawing. In all representations, however, he deviates significantly from the Genesis text and the Arcadian ideas of the Garden of Eden evoked by him. This is especially true of the actions of the protagonists - Adam, Eve, and the snake - by largely ignoring the biblical account of the Fall. The deviations and their significance for the interpretation of the works of art are given full attention in this study: like Dürer Adam and Eves fall, who in the book of Genesis as the seduction of Eve by the serpent and as the picking and eating together of the forbidden fruit from the tree of knowledge in the The middle of paradise is portrayed, told and staged in a completely different way. In addition, a brief look into the long tradition of depictions of the Fall of Man serves to compare and classify these important works by Durer.
