The collapse of the GDR in 1989 is a historic event, the presence of which can be felt in an incomparable way in the society of reunified Germany. Peaceful revolution, reunification and the following years are remembered, interpreted and appropriated in very different ways. The volume is dedicated to this polyphony and brings together contributions on unexpected continuities between political culture now and then, on the echoes of 1989 in East German protest movements over the past 30 years and on the history and significance of popular cultural representations from 1989 in music, literature and film. The current challenges facing the political and historical educational work on the GDR are also discussed.
